Diaries and papers relating to Stanly estate, 1877-[196-] (bulk 1877-1880).

The collection consists of two handwritten diaries kept by Edward Stanly (1879 and 1877-1880); an inventory of the John A. Stanly estate (1914); and a typed transcript of the 1877-1880 diary by family friend and/or neighbor, Roxana Hilt, with related handwritten and biographical notes [196-]. The 1879 diary is a leatherbound pocket diary with brief entries for Mar.-Nov., recording daily activities and expenses. The other diary is a hardcover journal with daily entries concerning Edward's management of his father's ranch.

Oakland resident John A. Stanly, a San Francisco attorney and judge, owned the Rincon de los Carneros Rancho, originally part of the 1836 land grant of Nicholas Higuera. His son, Edward Stanly, managed the ranch beginning in the late 1870s; he was particularly charged with managing the dairy farming and dairying.
